Shetland-based Shetland Smokehouse has announced that it has scooped a silver award at the Great Taste Awards 2005 for its smoked herring with lime, black pepper and chive pate. 150 food experts judged over 4,000 entries from the Speciality and Fine Food fairs held throughout the year, and selected the company's product for a silver prize.
The event is organised by The Guild of Fine Food Retailers and is recognised as the most prestigious speciality food and drink competition in the world.
Sales manager Norma Tulloch said: “We are delighted to have won this award which demonstrates the quality of the product and how well it is perceived in the highly competitive food and drink sector.
“Our pate range has been developed in conjunction with local chef, Bo Simmons, and also includes smoked salmon with lemon and cracked black pepper, and smoked mackerel with orange and chilli.
“The pates are prepared using a soya based cream cheese, are rich in Omega-3 fats, and have become very popular with consumers for their healthy properties, appealing taste and versatility.”
The product will now join the other bronze, silver and gold award winners at the second stage of judging at the Speciality and Fine Food Fair in London (4 to 6 September) where the major trophy winners and, ultimately, the Supreme Champion will be identified.
