Demlane Mussels shortlisted in Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards

Shetland mussel grower Demlane Mussels has been short listed in the 'Fish and Seafood' Retail Product section of this year's Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards for its lightly oak smoked mussels from Shetland.

The company, which is now owned by Isle of Shuna, is distinctive for smoking Shetland mussels in their shells, at source.  Doing so retains both freshness and flavour.  The actual cooking process is based on the traditional Shetland method; the mussels are cooked by gently steaming in their own juices and lightly oak smoked.

Now in its sixth year, the awards celebrate Scotland's highly succesful food and drink industry and present the perfect platform from which companies that are leading the way in innovation, enterprise and quality can shine.

Commenting on the news, Isle of Shuna's quality control officer, Anna Neish, said: "We are delighted to be short listed for this prestigious award.  Our product is relatively young in the marketplace and we are busy targeting both wholesale and retail markets to establish sales throughout the UK.

"We believe that we have taken a very innovative approach to developing our smoked mussels - at source - and, together with the fact that our mussels are of the highest quality and that we employ rigorous environmental practices to ensure that our enterprise is very much in harmony with that environment, we hope that we catch the imagination of the judges on the day."
